The Magic Parlour: An amazing evening at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, IL

What an amazing night. I’ve always had a fascination with magic growing up.  I loved doing cards tricks for the family and begged my mom for one of those magic boxes from the toy store.  Isn’t it every little kids dream to have magical powers?

While in Chicago, I found tickets for The Magic Parlour on HotTix (a site where you can purchase tickets for performance theaters in Chicago for half-off).  I wasn’t exactly looking for a magic show, but all of the reviews online looked good, so I decided to check it out.

Now, imagine being transported back in time – to an era of great opulence and art.  Entering the lobby of the Palmer House Hilton gives you that feeling with its high ceilings and french art.  The hotel was originally built in 1871 and is considered to  be the nation’s longest continually operating hotel.  One can only imagine the history and experiences that have occurred within those walls.

The Magic Parlour is located in a room on the third floor of the hotel.  When you first walk in, you check-in and collect your tickets with the host on the first floor.  The host then leads the entire group up to the room where the performance is held.  The show is very intimate.  I would say there were probably less than 30 people in our seating.  The magician, Dennis Watkins, is a third generation magician.  He explains his story, of how he got into magic, and why it’s his passion.  Most touching is a story he tells about his grandfather:

“He told me, ‘If you put someone inside of a box and cut them in half, people don’t believe it’s magic.  They think it’s a special box.  But if you can tear up their dollar bill and restore it right under their nose, or look into their mind and read their thoughts, or create any number of other miracles inches in front of their eyes, that is an experience they will never forget.’ ”  – Dennis Watkins (The Magic Parlour)

And that is exactly what Dennis Watkins does.  He takes you back to an era of classical magic, where there’s no lights and smoke, just magic.

I had a lovely experience that night.  The show is very interactive and he manages to get almost every audience member involved.  I left bewildered, but in a good way, contemplating how he performed many of those acts.  If you are ever in the Chicago area looking for something different to do, stop by the Palmer House Hilton and check out the show.  If you can’t get tickets or don’t want to see the show, at least you’ll be able to say that you visited one of the most historical buildings in the city.

4 Luaus Worth Discovering in Honolulu, Hawaii

Hawaii is an amazing paradise filled with beautiful sights, entertainment, and wonderful food.  When thinking about entertainment, you probably imagine a grand feast with a roasted pig, fire dancers, and tropical music.  With all of this in mind, who wouldn’t want to experience a luau on the big island? This past fall, my mother and I went on a trip to Waikiki and took advantage of the various entertainment packages Honolulu had to offer.  Visiting the island before, I already had an idea of the types of luau experiences that were available and had even attended a luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center.  However, this time I wanted to focus on staying in the area since attending a luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center is a whole day trip in itself.  After much research we decided on checking out Te Moana Nui and Rock-A-Hula Hawaii both located in the immediate Waikiki area.  Germaine’s Luau, while on the list, we were not able to attend, but it came highly recommended by family.  I hope you enjoy the list!  Let me know which is your favorite.  🙂

Rock-A-Hula Hawaii

Rock-A-Hula Hawaii

VIP Dinner Experience

Royal Hawaiian Center
2201 Kalakaua Avenue, Bldg. B, 4th Floor, Honolulu, HI 96815

Rock-A-Hula Hawaii is far from your average luau experience.  First of all, the show takes place in a theater type setting and showcases Elvis Presley, Lady Gaga, and Micheal Jackson impersonators.  I know you are probably thinking why this would be on a list of luaus worth discovering if it’s not your typical Hawaiian experience… well, that’s exactly why it’s worth discovering!  The singers and dancers are amazing.  The food was absolutely delicious; a three course selection including a beverage.  While my mother and I splurged on the VIP dinner, since it was our birthdays, we may have had a bit of a different experience.  But, I did overhear people raving about the buffet that is included with general admission.  Also, not only do you get a non-stop, music jiving, modern experience, but, they also make sure to do a traditional Hawaiian piece as well.  So don’t worry if you decide to check out the Rock-A-Hula, you won’t miss out on anything.

Te moana nui
Tales of the pacific

Te Moana Nui

2490 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815

The show that Te Moana Nui puts on is visually stunning.  You can see the detail and pride that every artist puts into their performance.  This luau narrates a story of the island and walks you through its history through song and dance.  The only thing that may take away from the experience would be that it is held inside of a hotel rather than outdoors, but I didn’t feel like that made a big difference.  Their backdrop, props, and side-effects transformed the entire space.  The food is tasty and is served buffet style.  They also encourage you to arrive about an hour or two before the show so that you can participate in arts and crafts.  They show you how to make lei bracelets, art, and even do tattoos.  There are also vendors on-site selling items which you can browse.  Overall, it is a great experience.  Transportation to the event is offered for a small fee, but if you are staying in Waikiki it is easily walkable.

Polynesian Cultural Center
ALI’I LUAU

55-370 Kamehameha Hwy, Laie, HI 96762

The luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center is very fun and over the top in comparison to the other three luau options.  The performance stage is huge and the eating area is set up stadium style.  You grab food at the buffet which is located outside and eat at tables located inside the stadium.  If you do not have a car, you can purchase round-trip transportation with your ticket, which offers various pick-up and drop-off locations.  If you are staying in Waikiki, it takes about an hour each way, which can really draw out your day.  You can choose to attend just the luau portion or visit the center for the entire day.  The luau is worth it, but I just remember feeling really exhausted after spending the entire day at the center.

Germaine’s Luau

91-119 Olai Street, Kapolei, HI 96707

Unfortunately, I have not personally attended Germaine’s Luau; however, it came highly recommended by family.  They raved about the performers, food, and ambiance.  It is an outdoor backyard style luau where you can stick your feet in the sand and enjoy the views of the ocean.  My aunt described the show as being very interactive, with even the pig roast being included as part of the performance.  Germaine’s is located about 30 minutes outside of Waikiki and offers complimentary transfers from certain locations.

Tasty treats from the Pineapple Promenade at the 2015 Epcot Flower and Garden Festival in Orlando, Florida

Here’s a look at some pineapple themed treats from the Pineapple Promenade at the 2015 Epcot Flower and Garden Festival. The pineapple sriracha hot dog was A M A Z I N G. 😍 My only complaint would be the price for what seemed to be only a 1/4 of a hot dog.  The pineapple dog was a new addition to the menu this year, which I hope they bring back for future events. It was an all beef spicy frank topped with a pineapple slaw and drizzled with a creamy sriracha. It definitely has a bit of a kick to it, but it’s quite delicious. At the promenade, they also sell a violet lemonade, which at first glance may seem out-of-place since it is not necessarily pineapple themed. I first tried this frozen treat last year and was curious as to what it would taste like since I had never tried anything that was “violet flavored” before.  I actually really enjoyed it. It’s hard to describe the flavor but I can tell you it is quite refreshing and pairs nicely with the spicy flavors of the pineapple dog. Another new addition to the menu this year was the sparkling pineapple wine. While the name of the wine enticed me, the flavor was a bit disappointing. I probably should have thought twice before ordering this since I’m not a big fan of wine. Maybe it’s just me, but this wine tasted like a semi-dry champagne with no real hint of pineapple. Perhaps this is considered a delicacy among wine connoisseurs, but I probably won’t be running out any time soon to purchase a bottle. I think I was expecting more of a sweeter flavor that you would get with a Riesling, and perhaps I cut the flavor by pairing it with the hot dog, but I just didn’t enjoy it as much as the other items. Overall, my experience with the treats at the Pineapple Promenade was good and I’m looking forward to the pineapple dog for next year. Or maybe I’ll just try to recreate it if I can’t wait and will let you know how it goes. Oh, and who can forget about the Dole Whips! They even sell them spiked with rum during the festival. Make sure to add those to your list for next year. 😉

Ollivander Wand Ceremony: Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Orlando, Florida

Have you ever been a part of a wand ceremony? I had no idea what I was stepping into when I stumbled upon Ollivander’s in Diagon Alley. It was towards the end of the day and I was walking around just taking in the sights to make sure I didn’t miss any details. There were so many small store fronts with cute displays. I peeked in through a window of what I thought was a fake store front. Looking back at me was a woman dressed in a cloak that motioned for me to come in. So, of course I did what any normal person would do in my situation, I followed the stranger into the backroom of the shop. 😜

The door closed behind me and the show began. The backroom was like a library filled with books on floor to ceiling shelves. In the room were four other individuals besides myself. A female wand keeper entered the room from the stairs. She was dressed in a cloak and hat and had a very whimsical way of speaking. She choose a young woman from the audience to step forward. She explained that she would be helping her to find her wand. We were explained that the wizard doesn’t choose the wand, the wand chooses you. She then picked through different wands and asked the guest to perform wizardly actions with the wand. Each time the action did not work it would break shelves or cause books to fall. It was both entertainingly funny and magical. Everyone in the room, although all adults, giggled and awed like kids. It was just so cute and so much fun. Once the wand chose the wizard the lighting in the room changed and whimsical music started to play. The show was officially over and we were ushered into the wand shop where we had the opportunity to purchase. The shop maintains a wide variety of wands both magical and not. The magical ones can be used throughout the Harry Potter themed areas to unlock special effects. The smile on the woman’s face, that was chosen for the performance, alone almost made the show worth it. She was so happy with her experience she ended up purchasing her wand. It was nice to see a true fan living out the movie.

A Peek into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida

Here’s a look into my adventures around the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I visited Universal Studios Orlando the first week of May and spent one day exploring the park. This Harry Potter themed expansion is absolutely amazing. 😍 I can’t even stress that enough. I’m always so surprised and amazed at the amount of creativity that people have and the ability to make these ideas into reality. I have to admit, I am not a big Harry Potter fan (sorry I’m just not). But, this theme park… what can I say, it blew me away! I think it’s probably the amount of detail that was put into this place that I loved. Every area of the Wizarding World has some sort of surprise; from the entrance to the hidden alleys. Even the window panes in the shops are interactive. As far as creativity and innovation, it’s amazing, just absolutely amazing. I don’t want to give too many details because I don’t want to spoil any surprises, so I’ll just show you my trip through photos instead. Hope you enjoy!
