Plan Check Kitchen + Bar | Burgers and Churros in Los Angeles

When my friend first asked if I wanted to try out Plan Check Kitchen and Bar, I thought maybe he typed too fast and autocorrect had changed the name of the restaurant… but no, Plan Check it was indeed!

Plan Check is a quirky neighborhood restaurant,

“serving modern American comfort food in a small plate format along with unique cocktails, premium whiskeys and craft beers.”

Their claim to fame is their ketchup leather, a dehydrated square of ketchup with a fruit roll-up texture.  (Tomatoes are considered a fruit right?)  I had to do a doable take when seeing this on the menu, but knew I had to try it right away.

PCB (Plan Check Burger)

PCB (Plan Check Burger) – americanized dashi cheese, ketchup leather, schmaltz onions, mixed pickles, crunch bun.

While I opted for the Plan Check Burger, my friend was more adventurous and tried the Chefs Favorite Burger; served with a fried egg and topped off with hot sauce!

Chefs Favorite Burger – cheese two ways, bacon two ways, ketchup leather, sunny fried egg, hot sauce.

To compliment the entrees we decided to split a goat cheese plate, sweet potatoe fries, and churro dessert.

We both agreed that the ketchup leather was delicious.  However, the most tastiest treat on the menu has to be the churro donut!  Dusted with cinnamon and brown sugar, the crunchy outside hides the vanilla flavored lightly moist texture on the inside.  I’m not quite sure why they call it a “cruller donut” because true cruller fashion would consist of a dense filling, whereas this donut is light on the inside.  Served on top of cream with fruit, asking for it a la mode is really the only way to go.

If you are visiting Los Angeles and looking for your burger and churro fix, make sure to check them out.  They have three locations within the area, with one conveniently located in downtown.  Visit their website or check out their reviews on Yelp.

Happy eating!

Motiviation | The Power of Kindness

These past couple of weeks for me have been, for a lack of a better word, challenging.  Everything from work to my personal life was eating away at me physically and emotionally. I was dealing with problems and situations at work that were trivial in hindsight but created for a toxic environment.  In my personal life, things were falling apart in areas where I had no control.  Nothing directly affected me, but as a friend, I was the emotional support.  Situations like these individually leave the average person drained. But when it’s one thing after another on top of another, affecting both your personal and professional life, it almost becomes a test of your will.

I remember going home after a more particularly challenging day. Arriving at my house after over an hour commute, just sitting in my car thinking about the day and feeling like my will had literally been broken.  I no longer felt that desire to do what was right, to deal with my coworkers or to support my friends.  I was broken.  Emotionally and physically. The days went on after this and it was the same routine, nothing became extremely worse but nothing really got better.  Then it was Friday.

On this particular Friday I had to move boxes of files from one location to another.  As I got caught up in meetings, most of my coworkers rushed out to head home at the end of the day, leaving me without a hand to help move the boxes. Since the parking lot was a bit of a ways, I loaded up everything I could into a small dolly and carried the rest while pushing along the cart.  In the elevator on the way down, a random stranger looked at me and said, “You look like you could need some help. I will open the doors for you.”  This stranger then went out of her way to walk to the other end of the building to hold the door so I could make my way out.  After walking across the street and struggling to make it to my car, I heard someone shouting behind me, “Miss, miss, let me help you with that!”  I turned around and saw that it was the parking attendant I passed by every morning.  We had never had any other interaction prior to this other than a wave hello in the mornings.  However, he went out of his way, running from one side of the parking structure to the other as he saw me struggling to make it to my car.  Without hesitation he took the boxes out of my hands and helped me load my things. “Have a good weekend,” he said. “Thank you,” I said, “you too.”

I then sat in my car, let out a breathe of relief and a tear rolled down my cheek.  These two strangers had no idea how their small acts of kindness affected me.  Trying to make it back to my car juggling all those boxes, thinking about how challenging the week had been, I felt so defeated.  My soul literally felt heavy.

Then, these two individuals stepped into my life, just for a brief moment, but they helped to unload not just the physical weight of the boxes, but an emotional weight as well.  When it should have been my coworkers’ duty to offer me help to move these boxes, these strangers helped out of the kindness of their hearts.  At that moment, my soul felt a little lighter.  It gave me the strength to move forward with the rest of my day without wanting to fall apart.

Never overlook the power of kindness. You have the power to make a difference in someone’s day.  Even a smile or a wave hello to a stranger can be all that they need to lift their spirits, if only for a moment.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

OOTD | Winter Blues & Plaid

Happy Saturday lovelies! ❤️  Hope you are having a good weekend.  It’s been wintertime bootie weather here in SoCal.  I recently got this long flannel plaid hoodie from the Nordstrom Rack and paired it with suede dark grey leggings and a thick navy C & C t-shirt.  The back of the hoodie is long enough to cover your bum and the material is thick enough to protect you from the slight wind chill.  I love the knee detail on the leggings and the metal embroidery on the booties which gives this outfit a more of an edgy look.  Hope this outfit inspires you!

Being normal is boring.

DIY Project: Updating a Front Tie Top

Do you have an attention to detail?  Like the type of attention where if you see a simple shirt with pearl buttons lining the back, you have to have that shirt because of the button detail.  Don’t worry, you are not alone.  Here’s a super easy DIY for adding detail and updating a front tie shirt to help with your addiction.  🙂

Front tie shirt beading DIY

I recently purchased this cold shoulder 70s style shirt by Jolt with an awesome wooden bead detail on the front ties.  So I was pretty bummed to loose beading on one side after just a few wears.  I had to fix this detail issue asap!

I went to Micheal’s and purchased jewelry beads with bead holes large enough to string through the front ties and small angel wing charms to sew on to the ends.  The beauty with updating your clothes is that you get a chance to add a bit of your personality and to be as creative as you want.

DIY: UPDATING YOUR FRONT TIE SHIRT

 What you need

  • Front Tie Shirt
  • Jewelry Beads
  • Crochet Hook
  • Optional:  Small Charms, Sewing Needle, and Thread

DIY Beading detail items you need

How to

  1. Organize your beads in the order you want them displayed before starting.
  2. Add the beads from top order to bottom on to each tie, utilizing the crochet hook to push the tie through.
  3. Double knot the ends to secure the beading in place.
  4. Optional:  Sew on charms to the ends for added security.

Tips

If your shirt is machine washable, pick beading that won’t easily damage with a wash.  Wooden charms would actually work best, but for added care hand wash and hang or lay flat to dry.

If you add glass pieces, throw your shirt in a pillow case when putting in the wash.  The pillow case will add protection to minimize damage to the beads.
